Thank you for your interest in applying to be a part of the Ontario Tech University/DC Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT). Below is a brief summary of what being a part of CERT entails. If you have any questions about the requirements, please contact one of the team executives for clarification. All CERT responders are volunteers, these are not paid positions.
Qualifications:
Applicants must be students at either Ontario Tech University or Durham College (full or part time enrollment). Preference that applications already have a current Standard First Aid and CPR HCP qualification or equivalent. Must be able to provide a clear police reference check prior to training (volunteer application letter available upon request); please note depending on the applicant’s permanent address this form can take 4-6 weeks to arrive.
Training for those applicants who are accepted:
It is an expectation that you will attend all training sessions held throughout the year. There will be a mandatory 50-hour training course that you must attend and PASS in order to become a CERT responder. You are not able to become an active CERT member until you complete this training successfully.
Responders are required to attend the mandatory training meeting each month throughout the school year. Training meetings last approximately 4 hours and are mandatory in order to ensure that your certification remains up to date.
Time Requirements:
Responders who are hired are expected to work a minimum of 12 hours bi-weekly (unless otherwise approved by the scheduling coordinator). Mandatory team meetings and training sessions do not count towards this time. There will also be 2 Annual General Meetings (one each semester) which are mandatory for all members to attend. Meeting dates will be announced a minimum of 1 month in advance in order to avoid scheduling conflicts. Do not underestimate the amount of time that being a part of CERT will occupy.
